METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DISTANCE MEASUREMENT BETWEEN TWO OPPOSING RELATIVELY MOVING SURFACES ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus determines wear between grinding surfaces (14, 16) (e.g. for grinding wood chips to produce mechanical paper pulp) of first and second members (10, 12) movable relative to each other. A transducer (T) is carried by the first member (10) and includes a core (30) surrounded by first and second coils (32, 34). Poles (P1-P3) of the core (30) terminate in a plane common to the plane containing the first grinding surface (14). A gap (G) is provided between the pole pieces (P1-P3) in the second grinding surface (16). A suitable electronic unit (38) provides electrical energy to the coil (32) to establish a magnetic field through the core, poles, gap, and second surface, the strength of the magnetic field being proportional to the distance between the surfaces (14, 16). The second coil (34) produces a signal proportional to the strength of the magnetic field, so that wear is determined by magnetic reluctance. A housing (22) containing the transducer is preferably of stainless steel.
