The invention relates to a method for drilling holes in the shell of a paper machine cylinder (s2), with said cylinder being unremoved from its operating position in a paper machine, in which method a drilling apparatus (1) is fixed to the adjacent cylinder (s1). In the method, the influence of mechanical play in the structures of said adjacent cylinder (s1) is eliminated prior to drilling. The invention also concerns a compatible apparatus.
