A method and apparatus for automatically terminating a communication network 10 after sensing a portion of the network 10 has been removed. A switch 12 is responsive to a voltage on the bus 14. The switch 12 senses the presence of the voltage on the bus 14 and generates a terminate enable. Upon sensing the absence of the voltage on the bus 14, a terminal resistor 20 is inserted onto the communication bus 14 to terminate the newly created end of the bus 14.
