A new and unique embedded keypad is described which takes advantage of the number keys 7, 8 and 9 while providing a standard keypad arrangement for those with special proficiency in 10-key numeric keypads while at the same time providing cursor controls embedded in the embedded keypad, such special characters being implemented without a dedicated numeric keypad thereby reducing the physical space requirements for such features on a keyboard. The present invention relates to a method of apparatus for embedding keys, necessary to accomplish a multitude of tasks, in a keyboard for a personal or portable computer without the incident physical space penalties associated with a prior art keyboard.
