A method and apparatus for identification of emergency conditions present at a given geographic location of an Internet Protocol (IP) based device and the subsequent appropriate alerting of an Emergency Services Notification (ESN) telephone number. The method and apparatus serve to monitor an IP packet flow from an IP telephony device and sense a datagram within the packet flow corresponding to an ESN dialing sequence. Upon sensing the ESN dialing sequence, the normal call packet flow is interrupted while IP-based call set-up information is returned as though a normal IP-based call were placed. An ESN call server is then alerted of the ESN dialing sequence and functions to forward the IP packet flow to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) appropriate to the IP telephony device along with location information corresponding to a civic address at which the IP telephony device is located.

Linvention concerne un procédé et un appareil didentification de conditions durgence présentes à un emplacement géographique donné dun dispositif compatible IP (Internet Protocol) et davertissement approprié subséquent dun numéro de téléphone de notification des services d'urgence (ESN). Le procédé et lappareil servent à surveiller un flux de paquets IP provenant dun dispositif de téléphonie IP et à détecter un datagramme dans le flux de paquets correspondant à une séquence de composition de numéro ESN. Lors de la détection de la séquence de composition de numéro ESN, le flux de paquets dappel normal est interrompu tandis que des informations détablissement dappel basé sur IP sont renvoyées comme s'il s'agissait d'un appel IP normal. Un serveur dappel ESN est ensuite averti de la séquence de composition de numéro ESN et agit pour acheminer le flux de paquets IP vers un centre téléphonique de sécurité publique (PSAP) approprié pour le dispositif de téléphonie IP avec des informations demplacement correspondant à l'adresse réelle à laquelle le dispositif de téléphonie IP est situé.
