A method and apparatus provide selective routing of users either into secured network or around the periphery of the network. The routing may be done based on such criteria as the identity of the user, the identity of the service provider from whom service is sought, or the data flow necessary to service the user's request. The gate architecture employed may include a network element associated with a switch. In this configuration the network element can maintain control of a connection even if it is determined to route the connection to another gate via external interfaces.
