A method for enlarging the intake opening on the roof of a grain bin. The grain bin has a small roof ring fastened in a center of the roof thereof, and defining an intake opening into an inferior of the bin having a first diameter. The method comprises providing a large roof ring defining a large intake opening having a second diameter that is greater than the first diameter; fastening the large roof ring to the roof over the small roof ring while leaving the small roof ring in place; cutting away the small roof ring and a portion of the roof that extends into the large intake opening, thereby providing an enlarged opening to the interior of the bin. The large roof ring provides sufficient structural stability to the roof to allow the cutting away. A lid is operative to open and close the large intake opening.
