ABSTRACT A data communication system, comprising a first and a second transceiver (20, 22) coupled together through a transmission channel (24), the transmission channel (24) having transmission characteristics. A measurement circuit (110) is coupled to the first transceiver (20) for measuring the effects of the transmission characteristics upon a known signal transmitted from the second transceiver (22) to the first transceiver (20) a mapping of the transmission characteristics to a code is made and the code is transmitted from the first transceiver (20) to the second transceiver (22). A plurality of predetermined filters (130, 132, ... 134) for use in filtering signals to be transmitted by the second transceiver (22) is selected upon receipt of the transmitted code.
