A method and apparatus for estimating internal brake energy in a fluid cooled brake (16) of the type used in large work machines from easily sensed machine operating parameters. The temperature of the coolant is sensed before and after it passes through the brake (16). The coolant flow rate through the brake (16) is determined from one or more additional sensed parameters (34), for example engine speed. The sensed parameters (34) are used in a thermodynamic model of the brake (16) which generates estimates of internal brake temperature (TEIB) and the amount of power absorbed by the brake (BRKP). Signals representing TEIB and optionally BRKP. The generated to provide indications of brake operation and/or health. The model is executed on a digital computer (36) either on-board the vehicle (12) or at a remote location.

Procédé et appareil d'évaluation de l'énergie interne d'un frein refroidi par fluide du type utilisé sur les grosses machines de chantier et cela à partir de paramètres de fonctionnement des machines faciles à mesurer. La température du réfrigérant est mesurée avant et après son passage dans le frein (16) et son débit à partir d'un ou plusieurs paramètres (34) additionnels tels que le régime du moteur. Les paramètres mesurés (34) servent à établir un modèle thermodynamique du frein (16) qui permet d'évaluer la température interne du frein et la quantité d'énergie absorbée par le frein. Des signaux représentatifs de ladite température et éventuellement de ladite énergie fournissent des indications sur le fonctionnement du frein et/ou son état. Le modèle est établi sur un ordinateur numérique (36) soit à bord du véhicule (12) soit à distance.
