A method and apparatus for evacuating a section of a natural gas pipeline. A first step involves isolating an out of service section of pipeline. A second step involves drawing natural gas from the out of service section of pipeline to a storage container with an evacuator until suction pressure falls below a predetermined level. A third step involves introducing an inert gas into the evacuator and using the inert gas to purge the evacuator of any remaining natural gas and push the purged natural gas to the storage container. It is preferred that an in service section of the pipeline be used as the storage container.
