Abstract of the Disclosure Disclosed is an apparatus for evacuating and closing flexible impervious receptacles such as pouches and bags which have at least one opening and contain at least one product. The apparatus comprises a first vacuum chamber, a second vacuum chamber adjacent to the first one, means providing an aperture in flow communication with the chambers for passing a portion of the receptacle containing the opening through the aperture, means to evacuate the chambers independently of each other and to evacuate the receptacle and means to close the receptacle when its evacuation has been completed. Means are provided for effecting an improved seal between the chambers throughout a range of receptacle size wherein the aperture-providing means includes means for adjusting the size of the aperture to substantially preclude flow communication of the first and second chambers other than flow communication through the opening in the receptacle. Also disclosed is a method for evacuating and closing a bag or the like making use of apparatus of the nature just described.
