ABSTRACT A method and preferred apparatus for expanding moisture containing tobacco. Tobacco is very rapidly heated by a stream of heated gas, by contacting a high speed downdraft flow of said gas with said tobacco while said tobacco is in transit on a gas porous conveyer. Said conveyer is preferably configured as a cylindrical drum with a gas porous cylindrical surface, rotating about its axis.
