There is provided a process and apparatus for the production of an anhydrous chloride comprising feeding and reacting, in the molten state, a precursor solid salt containing oxygen with an oxygen-reducing gas and/or Cl2 transferred directly from an electrolytic cell, or from a series of cells without intermediate pressure or temperature correcting means and transferring such anhydrous chloride directly to the cell(s). The apparatus extends to a pump for molten salts and an oxygen sensor for use in molten salts.
