A method for filtering edible oils utilizing a backwashable filter assembly (10). A filter system having at least two filter assemblies (A, B) may be utilized to remove bleaching clay and/or nickel catalyst from oil being processed for human consumption. The filter assemblies may be connected in a tandem manner to provide continuous and uninterrupted filtering of the edible oil. Each filter assembly preferably comprises multiple, substantially cylindrical filter elements (18) having a porous filter medium which may be formed from polyaramid fibers. The filter elements are designed to withstand the elevated temperatures used in edible oil processing and for ease of cleaning during backwashing.

L'invention concerne un procédé de filtration d'huiles comestibles à l'aide d'un filtre (10) de lavage à contre-courant. On utilise un système de filtration doté d'au moins deux filtres (A, B) pour extraire l'argile décolorante et/ou le catalyseur à base de nickel des huiles en cours de traitement et les rendre propres à être consommés par l'homme. Les filtres peuvent être montés en tandem afin d'assurer le filtrage en continu et non interrompu de l'huile comestible. De préférence, chaque filtre comprend de nombreux éléments filtrants (18) essentiellement cylindriques qui contiennent un milieu filtrant poreux pouvant être constitué de fibres de polyaramide. Les éléments filtrants sont conçus pour résister aux températures élevées utilisées dans le traitement des huiles comestibles et sont faciles à nettoyer lors du lavage à contre-courant.
