ABSTRACT A method for extinguishing fires which is particularly suited for extinguishing burning liquids. The area of the fire is covered by granulated or chopped mineral wool which is spread out over the fire in a sufficiently thick layer. The apparatus for carrying out the method consists of a blower which is provided with knives by means of which the mineral wool may be granulated. The apparatus can be used for removing the mineral wool after the fire has been extinguished.
