ABSTRACT A folded bed ion exchange system with a resin-containing loading column and a resin-containing stripping column,and a first resin transfer means for moving liquid containing loaded resin from the upper portion of the loading column to the lower portion of the stripping column,and a second resin transfer means for moving liquid-containing stripped resin from the upper portion of the stripping column to the lower portion of the loading column. The loaded resin is passed through separate treatment and pulse chambers,the treatment chambers having gas and liquid inlet and outlet means for removing the liquid from the resin with means for selectively isolating the last treatment chamber from the pulse chamber. The removed liquid is discharged while the treat- ment and pulse chambers are isolated, the pulse chamber receiving the treated resin from the last treatment chamber when connected to it. Pressure generated in the pulse chamber allows transfer of pulsed increments of treated resin to the stripping column. Liquid can be circulated through the pulse chamber to provide a compacted bed of resin in its lower portion before transfer. The transfer of stripped resin through similar treatment and pulse chambers is also described, as is the simultaneous pulsing of loaded and stripped resin so that the loading and stripping columns are maintained full.
