In a method of forming an irregular pattern of granules (15) on an asphalt coated sheet (13), a flow of granules (15) is discharged toward the sheet (13). The granules (15) are deflected onto the sheet (13) with a deflector (17) having an irregular surface (46) to form a granule deposit (20) having an irregular pattern. In one embodiment of the method, the deflected granules (15) are controlled with a shield (90, 103). Apparatus for forming an irregular pattern of granules (15) on an asphalt coated sheet (13) includes a granule applicator (14) for discharging a flow of granules (15), a deflector (17) having an irregular surface (46) for deflecting the granules (15), and optionally a shield (90, 103) for controlling the granules (15).
