ABSTRACT The present invention relates to high speed processes and apparatus for the manufacture of cigarette filter rods. In accordance with this invention it has been discovered that in a process of manufacturing filter elements from opened and deregistered crimped continuous filament tow, wherein said tow is conducted from a mechanical for- warding means through an aspirating jet positioned adjacent a com- pacting means and wherein means are provided for dissipating as- pirating fluid, that filter rod pressure drop and weight variations are reduced by causing the opened and deregistered tow to contact a drag inducing tow width and direction controlling means positioned substantially intermediate said mechanical forwarding means and said aspirating jet.
