The invention provides a method of making the usable wood volume of tree trunks as large as possible by producing octagonal or dodecagonal dressed timbers, from which boards or beams with inclined edges are then cut. To produce octagonal or dodecagonal dressed timbers, in a first machining stage, two side surfaces are milled off the tree trunk. It is then turned by 90° and two additional side surfaces are milled off in a second machining station. Immediately thereafter, in another machining station, the remaining rough edges are milled off with four (for octagonal dressed timbers) or eight (for dodecagonal dressed timbers) milling cutters.
