Abstract of the Disclosure A method and apparatus is provided for automatically grouping ingots into two kinds of stack units of different patterns with a minimum of grouping steps, in which the four ingots forming the stack unit of the first kind are grouped in one of the patterns utilizing the arrangement of the ingots as they are successively delivered from ingot casting molds of a continuous casting apparatus onto a main conveyor, and the four ingots forming the stack unit of the second kind are grouped by rotating two of the ingots in the stack unit of the first kind, 90° relative to the remaining two.
