METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR FORMING PIPE REINFORCING CAGES AND LIKE CLOSED LOOP OBJECTS Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to welding apparatus for welding free ends of circumferential wires defining a cylindrical wire cage to provide a line upset welded junction between the wires. The apparatus includes holders for holding opposite ends of a section of wire fabric with circumferentially extending wires having free ends positioned in overlapping abutment with each other, and a carriage assembly movable along the length of the cylinder. At least one welding head is coupled to the carriage for movement toward and away from the cylinder, the welding head including at least one pair of gripping electrodes movably and insulatively mounted with respect to each other. Power supply means are coupled to the electrodes. A positioner sequentially positions the welding head in aligned relationship to a circumferential wire, lowers the gripping electrodes into proximity with the free ends of the circumferential wire, closes the electrodes to grip the free ends, and applies welding energy to the electrodes for providing a line upset weld between the ends of the circumferen- tial wire. 1.
