There is described a method and a device for forming a solid phase plug in a conduit for fluid media, the device including a jacket in one or more pieces selected to fit around the conduit, the jacket being fabricated from a substance that is at least partially conformable to the surface of the conduit, and circulation tubing within the one or more pieces of jacket for circulating a cooling liquid, a cooling gas, or a combination of cooling liquid and cooling gas within the one or more pieces of jackets, to cool the liquid media in the conduit, and cause it to form a solid phase plug therein.
