Method and apparatus for forming a string (136) of springs (16) enclosed within individual pockets of a fabric sleeve (33) having flat, overlapping side flaps (A, B). The flaps form a longitudinally extending side seam (138) in the string, thus preventing the common problem of false loft in conventional mattress constructions.
