ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Electrochromic material, i. e. , a material in which visible images can be formed by chemically produced colour changes as a result of the selective use of electric potentials, is coloured by passing an electric pulse of predetermined polarity through the material, the pulse being at a potential above a colouration threshold potential for the material simultaneously or subsequently a D.C. potential of the same polarity but less in magnitude to the threshold potential is applied to the material. Colouration develops as if the material had been connected to an above-threshold D. C. volt- age. The charge passed by the pulse can be up to two hundred times lower than that needed for colouration by pulse alone.
