A B S T R A C T The invention is a welding machine for making rings by micro plasma torch welding of opposed clamped ends of a forming blank and a method for making such rings. An automatic sequence of operations enabling a very short cycle of operation is provided. Beginning with strip stock, an end portion of the strip is clamped and a ring is formed while the strip remains clamped. The end portions of the formed blank are gripped and bent into a substantially circular configuration, with the ends of the blank presented in opposed relationship. The opposed ends are then welded using a micro plasma torch, while the blank remains gripped. The machine includes a pair of slidable carriage bases, each carrying a pivot arm for bending the blank.
