In one example, the apparatus comprises an electrical waveform generator (1-6) for generating bursts of relatively high frequency bipolar electrical energy (10), the bursts being generated at a relatively low frequency; and, between the bursts, for generating a DC level (11), the DC level alternating between positive and negative values. In another example, the apparatus comprises an electrical waveform generator (1-6) for generating bursts of relatively high frequency and for inverting the polarity of the waveform at a relatively low frequency.
