A method and apparatus for guiding a driverless vehicle along a path defined by a guide cable carrying a current in a horizontal road surface includes mounting a first coil, having a major coil axis, at +45 degrees relative to the horizontal on said vehicle, mounting a second coil, having a major coil axis, at -45 degrees relative to the horizontal on said vehicle such that the axes of said first and second coils intersect, sensing both the radial and circular field vectors of the electromagnetic field with each coil, comparing the magnitude of the radial vector with the magnitude of the circular vector for each coil whereby the lateral position of the intersection point of the axes of the coils is determined relative to the guide cable to indicate the lateral displacement of the vehicle relative to said path, and using the displacement information in the vehicle steering system.
Méthode et dispositif utilisés pour guider un véhicule sans conducteur sur un tracé défini par un câble de guidage portant un courant sur un parcours dont la surface est horizontale. L'invention consiste à installer sur le véhicule une première bobine, dont l'axe principal est à un angle de +45 degrés par rapport à l'horizontale; à installer sur le véhicule une deuxième bobine, dont l'axe principal est à un angle de -45 degrés par rapport à l'horizontale de telle sorte que les axes de la première et de la deuxième bobines se croisent; à capter les vecteurs champ circulaire et radial du champ électromagnétique avec chaque bobine; à comparer la magnitude du vecteur radial à celle du vecteur circulaire pour chaque bobine, ce qui permet de déterminer l'emplacement latéral du point d'intersection des axes des bobines par rapport au câble de guidage pour indiquer le déplacement latéral du véhicule par rapport au même tracé, et à utiliser l'information sur le déplacement dans le système de direction du véhicule.
