METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR HANDLING LARGE WIRE ROPES Abstract of the Disclosure. A method of handling large wire ropes, such as during the erection, repair, or dismantling of large excavating machines, in which the socket affixed to the end of such a rope is engaged and pulled or lifted with a resul- tant pulling force acting substantially along the longitudinal direction of the rope. A carrier, for use in the foregoing met- hod, includes a body having a central tapered opening extending through it and adapted to embrace the conical shank of the rope socket. The carrier also includes means for attaching it to the cable of an auxiliary hoisting device at several locations spaced symmetrically and equidistantly about the axis of the central opening, and means for putting it in position about the rope and in engagement with the socket without having to detach the socket from the rope.
