ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a method and apparatus for producing roving with a controlled number of strands, each of a plurality of linear elements is advanced along a given path so that light directed to the element is reflected therefrom with varying intensity with regard to the speed of advancement of the element. Light is directed to each element for reflection therefrom and changes in the reflected light are sensed to provide an indication of changes in the speed of each element's advancement. Signals are produced in response to the changing reflected light and the advancement of the elements is controlled in response to the signals.
