ABSTRACT A method of handling measuring and sampling probe tubes, in the production of metal, more particularly steel, the probe tubes accommodating elements for measuring tempera- tures, measuring gases, and sampling. The probe tube is removed horizontally from probe storage, is secured ver- tically to a measuring lance, is lowered into the bath of metal, is raised after the measuring or sampling procedure, and is returned to storage. If measuring and sampling are to be carried out at short intervals, rapid manipulation of the probe tubes is essential. The time for a complete cycle is shortened in that the probe tube, located hori- zontally in the manipulator, is moved directly onto a ver- tical measuring axis, using only one pivoting motion in the vertical plane, is attached to a measuring lance, is then raised from the manipulator and is lowered, on a measuring track which has in the meanwhile been made available, into the bath of metal, is raised after measu- ring or sampling has been carried out, and is stored.
