A method and apparatus for heat stretching a synthetic fiber rope (60). The rope (60) is buoyed in a vessel (20) containing a liquid medium, and this is heated to a predetermined stretching temperature. Tension is applied to the heated portion of the rope (60) so as to stretch this to a predetermined increase in length. The process may be batchwise, or it may be continuous. In the batch process, a length of rope (60) is stretched in the heating vessel (20) by a draw rod (48). In the continuous process feed and take-up capstans (252, 254) pass the rope (60) through a heating chamber (222), and then through a cooling chamber (228). The capstans (252, 254) are operated at different speeds so that the rope (60) is tensioned and stretched between them within the vessel (206).
