The disclosed cylinder for heat-treating a web is rotatable about a horizontal axis and is heated by a complement of internal stationary infrared burners that extend all along the length of the cylinder, but whose arcuate extent is limited for establishing a specified cylinder heat output when the burner(s) is (are) supplied with air-fuel mixture at their maximum rate. Reduction of the air-fuel supply rate over a wide range allows the cylinder heat output to be reduced as the web processing speed is reduced. When the burner is divided into segments, the temperature profile along the cylinder; i.e., across the width of the web, can be regulated to adjust the moisture profile of the web. An exhaust manifold within and along the cylinder is configured so as to avoid any local accumulation of high- temperature exhaust. A paper or paperboard making machine that is in existence, having steam-heated cylinders, may be retrofitted with the novel cylinders, as substitutes for selected steam-heated cylinders at those locations where there is greatest gain; alternatively, all of the steam-heated dryer cylinders of a paper or paperboard machine may advantageously be replaced by the novel cylinders, heated by stationary internal complements of IR burners whose arcuate extent is varied, cylinder-to-cylinder, in accordance with their respective desired operating temperatures. For greater effect, adding a stationary external IR burner opposite to a novel internally heated cylinder heat the web simultaneously from opposite sides and within its thickness, by penetrating infrared radiation.
Un cylindre (20) de traitement thermique d'une nappe de fibres en rotation autour d'un axe horizontal est chauffé par des brûleurs additionnels (38) infrarouges, internes et stationnaires. Ces brûleurs sont disposés sur toute la longueur du cylindre, enveloppant le cylindre partiellement en circonférence, de façon à laisser un intervalle. La configuration d'un collecteur (34), disposé au niveau de l'intervalle selon la longueur du cylindre, permet d'éviter l'accumulation locale de gaz d'émission. Les proportions des dimensions exactes du (des) brûleur(s) permettent d'obtenir le niveau nominal de production de chaleur par le cylindre lorsque le(s) brûleur(s) est (sont) alimenté(s) à débit maximal en mélange air-combustible. La réduction du débit d'alimentation en mélange air-combustible sur une large bande permet de réduire la production de chaleur par le cylindre ainsi que de réduire la vitesse de traitement de la nappe de fibres. Avec un brûleur est segmenté, on a la possibilité de réguler le profile de température le long du cylindre, c'est-à-dire dans le sens de la largeur de la nappe de fibres, et donc d'obtenir pour l'humidité de la nappe de fibres le profile voulu.
