A mixture of hydrogen and air is introduced onto the face of the catalytic monolith of a catalytic converter (11) in the exhaust line (42) of a cold internal combustion engine. The hydrogen spontaneously combusts, thereby pre-heating the catalytic converter (11). Pre-heating the catalytic converter (11) significantly improves the effectiveness of the catalytic converter (11) in eliminating undesirable emission of the internal combustion engine. The hydrogen is preferably produced on-board the vehicle using the system. The hydrogen source (52) may also be coupled to the internal combustion engine to be burned by the engine during startup in the absence of gasoline to minimize the production of unacceptable emission while the catalyst is brought up to light-off temperature.

Dans cette invention, un mélange d'hydrogène et d'air est introduit à la surface du monolithe catalytique d'un convertisseur catalytique (11), dans le conduit d'échappement (42) d'un moteur à combustion interne froid. L'hydrogène s'enflamme spontanément, préchauffant ainsi le convertisseur catalytique (11). Ce préchauffage du convertisseur catalytique (11) améliore considérablement son pouvoir d'élimination des émissions indésirables du moteur à combustion interne. L'hydrogène est de préférence produit à bord du véhicule utilisant un tel système.
