A method and apparatus for heating a paper web in a calender in which the paper web is heated before it is passed into a calendering nip of the calender. The paper web is heated by a source of radiation and the heat radiation coming from the source of radiation is condensed and guided (focused) by a reflector face or an equivalent optical device onto the paper web and/or onto a face of one of the rolls in the calendering nip substantially directly before the calendering nip.
