An apparatus for hot tapping includes a housing having a first end and a second end The first end has an attachment for sealably attaching the housing to a body to be hot tapped. An extension rod has a profile along a length of the extension rod. The extension rod is received by the housing. The extension rod has a first end and a second end. The first end of the extension rod carries means for creating an opening in the body to be hot tapped. There is provided a seal for sealing the first end of the extension rod within the housing. There is provided a valve for sealing the first end of the housing when the first end of the extension rod is withdrawn from the first end of the housing. A hot tapping drive drives the means for creating the opening in the body to create the opening. An extension rod drive controls the position of the extension rod within the housing by engaging the profile of the extension rod.
