A method and apparatus for hydro-forming the walls of thin-walled small tubes (1). A mold (10, 11) is provided having an internal surface (13) to support the wall of the tubing and defines cavities (16, 17) that correspond to the desired features. A fluid filled hollow needle (5) having no O-rings or seals thereon is provided that has at least one opening (8a, 8b, 9a, 9b 9c) therein for supplying hydraulic fluid under pressure to the inside surface (2) of the tubing. The needle has an outer diameter that is smaller than the inner diameter of the tubing to form a small clearance (7) therebetween when the needle is in the tubing. The clearance sufficient high enough to deform the wall, while also facilitating insertion and removal of the needle into and from the tubing.
Procédé et appareil utilisés pour hydroformer les parois de petits tubes (1) à paroi mince. On utilise un moule (10, 11) comportant une surface interne (13) pour supporter la paroi du tube, ce moule définissant des cavités (16, 17) qui correspondent aux caractéristiques désirées. On utilise aussi une aiguille creuse (5) remplie de fluide dépourvue de joints ou de joints toriques d'étanchéité qui comprend au moins une ouverture (8a, 8b, 9a, 9b, 9c) servant à envoyer du fluide hydraulique sous pression sur la surface interne (2) du tube. Le diamètre extérieur de cette aiguille est inférieur au diamètre intérieur du tube de manière à former un petit espace (7) entre ces derniers lorsque l'aiguille se trouve dans le tube. Cet espace est suffisamment important pour déformer la paroi et facilite également l'introduction de l'aiguille dans le tube et sa sortie.
