METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR IGNITING FLARE GAS ABSTRACT An apparatus and method are disclosed for igniting flare gas at an oil well or refinery, in which a flow of gas is directed into an expansion chamber where expansion and condensation take place, after which the gas moves upwardly within the chamber and past an aperture in the chamber sidewall where a portion of the gas is withdrawn for ignition outside the chamber to form a pilot flame which ignites the remainder of the gases exiting from the open top of the chamber.
