The invention provides a method and apparatus for performing correspondence estimation between pixels of a stereo image pair to obtain matching information for corresponding pixels in each image. To perform a match for a particular pixel in a first image firstly an adaptive curve is constructed about the pixel, being a sequence of connected pixels with similar intensity values to the pixel being matched. The adaptive curve thus constructed is then used as a matching element within the second image to find a matching pixel representative of the same 3D scene point in the second image to the particular pixel. By performing matching in this manner for every pixel in an image, accurate disparity maps can be obtained which are then used in a known image synthesis algorithm to produce novel images of a scene of improved quality.
La présente invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif permettant de réaliser une évaluation des correspondances de pixels à pixels entre les deux images d'une vue stéréoscopique de façon à établir les données de concordance concernant les pixels en correspondance d'une image à l'autre. Pour établir une concordance applicable à un pixel pris en particulier dans une première image, on commence par construire autour de ce pixel une courbe adaptative constituée d'une suite de pixels reliés entre eux et présentant des valeurs d'intensité semblables à celles du pixel en cours de mise en concordance. La courbe adaptative ainsi obtenue sert alors, à l'intérieur de l'autre image, d'élément de concordance permettant de trouver un pixel en concordance avec le pixel considéré, et représentatif dans l'autre image du même point de la vue tridimensionnelle. Cette façon de réaliser la concordance pour chaque pixel d'une image permet d'aboutir à des relevés de disparités précis pouvant être repris par un algorithme de synthèse d'image connu pour produire avec une qualité accrue de nouvelles images d'une vue.
