The power handling capability of polymer fibers is increased by broadening an input intensity profile, which is typically Gaussian, without significantly decreasing the efficiency of coupling light into a polymer fiber. The method for increasing the power handling capability of polymer fibers includes the steps of: a) emitting light having a Gaussian intensity profile from a fiber light source (100); b) broadening the Gaussian intensity profile so that energy at the center of the Gaussian intensity profile is distributed to the perimeter to reduce the peak power intensity of the emitted light before it is launched into the polymer fiber; c) transmitting the emitted light into at least one polymer fiber (300). Preferably, a tapered or twisted fused bundle (200) is used to broaden the intensity profile and preferably the fused bundle has an angled input end face. As a result, more total power can be coupled into the polymer fiber while keeping below the melting threshold caused by the light absorption -- enabling, for example, power in excess of 1 Watt to be transmitted through a 1-mm diameter PMMA fiber.
L'invention vise à augmenter la capacité de charge de fibres polymères par élargissement du profil d'intensité d'entrée, notamment gaussien, sans que l'efficacité du couplage de lumière dans une fibre polymère soit considérablement réduite. Le procédé d'augmentation de la capacité de charge des fibres polymères consiste à: a) émettre de la lumière ayant un profil d'intensité gaussien, à partir d'une source lumineuse à fibres; b) élargir le profil d'intensité gaussien de sorte que l'énergie au centre du profil d'intensité gaussien soit distribuée en périphérie afin de réduire l'intensité de la puissance de crête de la lumière émise avant qu'elle ne soit injectée dans la fibre polymère; et enfin, c) transmettre la lumière émise dans au moins une fibre polymère. On utilise, de préférence, un faisceau fusionné pour élargir le profil d'intensité, ce faisceau fusionné présentant, de préférence, une face d'extrémité d'entrée inclinée. Ainsi, il est possible de coupler davantage de puissance totale dans la fibre polymère, tout en restant en dessous du seuil de fusion imputable à l'absorption de lumière -ce qui permet, par exemple, de transmettre un excédent de puissance de 1 Watt à travers une fibre PMMA de 1mm de diamètre.
