AT9-89-118 METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR IMPROVING OUTPUT DISPLAY DEVICE RESOLUTUION ABSTRACT The present invention achieves an increase in effective resolution of color output display devices, and in the preferred embodiment to liquid crystal display devices. A three component color signal being used to generate a color image in conjunction with a pel pattern is modified to horizontally displace, or delay, a single color component of the color signal by substantially one half pel relative to the remaining color components. Additionally, the pels displaying this image are offset half a pel in the opposite direction to bring the images back into alignment, but with the pel sites horizontally out of alignment. Further, this single component can be vertically offset in a similar manner relative to the remaining color components. The effect of this color component offset is to increase the effective resolution of the output display device, as seen by the eye, without adding significantly to the complexity of the image generating apparatus.
