The subject invention pertains to a method and apparatus for inducing a lateral load for the purpose of increasing the force needed to lift a pile and/or increasing the downward and/or lateral load bearing capacity of a pile. The pile can be a driven or pushed displacement pile, a driven or pushed non- displacement pile, any type of bored pile, or any combination. In an embodiment, the subject invention can enhance pile performance by increasing (prestressing) permanently the lateral pressure between a pile and its surrounding soil. The subject invention can provide directional displacement through induced lateral loading of installed piles. Embodiments of the subject invention can incorporate embedded lateral loads in one or more piles.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de provoquer une charge latérale dans le but d'augmenter la force nécessaire pour soulever un pieu et/ou augmenter la capacité de charge portante descendante et/ou latérale d'un pieu. Le pieu peut être un pieu à déplacement par enfoncement ou par poussée, un pieu sans déplacement par enfoncement ou par poussée, un type quelconque de pieu foré, ou une combinaison quelconque de ceux-ci. Dans un mode de réalisation, l'invention peut perfectionner la performance du pieu en augmentant (par précontrainte) de manière permanente la pression latérale exercée entre un pieu et son sol environnant. L'invention permet d'obtenir un déplacement directionnel par le biais d'un chargement latéral provoqué des pieux installés. Des modes de réalisation de l'invention peuvent inclure des charges latérales intégrées dans un ou plusieurs pieux.
