ABSTRACT A method and an apparatus for indicating the size distribution of particles in a flowing medium are disclosed. The medium is lit with a light that is perpendicular to the flow direction and has a substantially constant intensity, and a fixed duration. The light passing through the medium is converted to an electric signal that varies with the light intensity. A number of measuring devices are employed, each having a light source, detector and optics therebetween. The different devices have different resolutions and detector fields of vision. All of the devices are used on a medium to be tested and the readings from all, in conjunction with sen- sitivity coefficients of the devices to different particle size portions, yield the particle size distribution.
