The invention relates generally to methods and apparatus for inducing hypothermia in an animal. Known methods for inducing hypothermia all involve cooling the outside or inside of an animal, sometimes in conjuction with drugs that disable the animal's homeostatic responses. The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for applying heat to the hypothalamus of a warm-blooded animal in order to utilize the physiological mechanisms that regulate body temperature to effect a compensatory cooling response, thereby lowering body temperature. It is new and unsuggested in the art to apply heat in an effort to reduce body temperature. The invention effects the desired lowering of body temperature by the method of raising the temperature of the hypothalamus, a brain structure situated in humans just above the pituitary gland responsible for temperature regulation, by warming a nasal passage, or a sinus, such as the sphenoid sinus that is nearest to the hypothalamus, or by direct warming of the hypothalamus, or a combination of these.
L'invention concerne, de manière générale, un procédé et un appareil servant à provoquer l'hypothermie chez un animal. Tous les procédés existants, destinés à provoquer l'hypothermie chez un animal, passent par le refroidissement de celui-ci, à l'intérieur ou à l'extérieur, parfois en conjonction avec des médicaments servant à bloquer ses réactions homéostasiques. La présente invention se rapporte à un procédé et à un appareil destinés à appliquer de la chaleur à l'hypothalamus d'un animal à sang chaud afin d'utiliser les mécanismes physiologiques régulant sa température corporelle pour provoquer une réaction de refroidissement de compensation et baisser ainsi ladite température corporelle. L'application de la chaleur pour réduire la température corporelle est une solution nouvelle, jamais proposée dans les techniques antérieures. L'invention permet de baisser la température corporelle jusqu'à un niveau désiré par l'augmentation de la température de l'hypothalamus, qui est une structure située dans le cerveau humain juste en dessus de l'hypophyse et responsable de la régulation de température. L'invention utilise le réchauffement d'un canal du nez ou du sinus, par exemple du sinus sphénoïdal, situé tout près de l'hypothalamus, ou bien le réchauffement direct de l'hypothalamus, ou encore une combinaison de ces deux procédés.
