Abstract The present invention relates to a method of uniformly induction heating a metallic elongated element having longitudinal sections of differ- ent thicknesses. The invention more particularly relates to a method of ensuring substantially uniform heating for a metallic elongated element over the whole length thereof irrespective of the existence of different thickness or diameter section(s). Specifically, an inductor for practicing the method of the invention is constructed in the form of a multi-turn coil which is adapted to be separated into a certain number of coil segments corresponding to the geometrical configuration of the metallic elongated element. Uniform distribution of temperature over the metallic elongated element is achieved by properly program controlling power supply to the respective coil segments and thereby controlling the heating time of the various longitudinal segments of the element. The inductor itself is main- tained fixed. Thus, irrespective of the irregular stepped configuration of the metallic elongated material, substantially uniform heating is ensured by preparing an adequate program corresponding to it.
