ABSTRACT A method and apparatus for induction heating or melting furnaces of varying conductance, utilizes controlled adjustment of the power factor angle in response to variations in load conductance to maintain constant power. The apparatus includes a power control device and a parallel resonant circuit DC/AC inverter supplying AC power to the furnace. AC power is held constant by adjustment of the power factor angle to the parallel resonant circuit load as a function of the varying load conductance of the load while the direct current to the inverter is maintained constant. The apparatus includes as well limit means to restrict the power factor angle to a predetermined minimum value.
