Water containing suspended particulate material is pumped upwards from a suction region above the bottom and is transported away laterally by means of the lateral displacement of the upper level of the water. To ad- vantage at least one inlet pipe is connected to the lower portion of an upstanding pump pipe for increasing the range of the apparatus.
