ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention comprises the novel application of a cation exchange membrane to a finger type electrolytic cell, whereby the upper and lower horizontal surfaces of the cathodes are covered by membrane installation frames, cylindrically shaped cation exchange membranes having flanged or flared end portions are positioned substantially parallel to the vertical surfaces of the cathodes, and the flanged or flared portions of the membranes are joined to mounting regions of the frames, whereby the membranes are installed in the cell substantially parallel to the vertical surfaces of the cathodes. Not only is the operational efficiency of the membrane installation in the electrolytic cell markedly improved, but also the quality of the alkali metal hydroxide liquor obtained is greatly enhanced. The present invention provides the ability to convert an asbestos or modified asbestos finger type electrolytic cell into an ion exchange membrane electrolytic cell very economically and effectively.
