ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a token ring computer network, an adapter is able to interface sta- tions in a variety of configurations. The adapter has two operating modes, one in which an internal relay circuit functions as an integral trunk cou- pling unit, and another in which an external trunk coupling unit is used. The ability to operate in these two modes facilitates interfacing with net- works using star topology, loop topology, or a hybrid of the two. A cable assembly facilitates connection of a network without external trunk cou- pling units using a series of adapters in the "internal trunk coupling unit" operating mode.
