A method for monitoring the presence of selected chromophores in a sample of epithelial tissue, independent of the amount of a predetermined chromophore, the method comprising: illuminating an area of tissue by projecting light from a light source of at least two different wavelengths .lambda.1, .lambda.2; receiving light remitted by the illuminated area of tissue at a photoreceptor; analysing the received light to identify and measure the proportion of light of each wavelength remitted from the tissue Ir (.lambda.) ; calculating the ratio of light at each wavelength returned from the tissue Rt, (.lambda.) , and then calculating Z = Formula (I); where l is chosen such that Z is independent of the amount of predetermined chromophore. Typically l is calculated such that Z = Formula (II); where j and k are such that 2 j .alpha.(.lambda.1) = 2kj .alpha.(.lambda.2 ) =1 where a(.lambda.1) and .alpha.(.lambda.2) are the absorbtion coefficients for the predetermined chromophore at each wavelength.

La présente invention concerne un procédé permettant de détecter la présence de chromophores sélectionnés dans un échantillon de tissu épithélial, indépendamment de la quantité d'un chromophore prédéterminé. Ce procédé consiste : à éclairer une zone de tissu à l'aide d'une source de lumière projetant de la lumière d'au moins deux longueurs d'ondes différentes .lambda.¿1?, .lambda.¿2? ; à recevoir la lumière renvoyée par la zone de tissu éclairée au niveau d'un photorécepteur ; à analyser la lumière reçue pour identifier et mesurer la proportion de lumière de chaque longueur d'ondes renvoyée par le tissu I¿r? (.lambda.); à calculer le rapport de lumière à chaque longueur d'ondes réfléchie par le tissu R¿t? (.lambda.) ; puis à calculer Z= (formule I) dans laquelle l est choisi de telle sorte que Z soit indépendant de la quantité de chromophore prédéterminé. l est habituellement calculé de telle sorte que Z= (formule II) dans laquelle j et k sont tels que 2j.alpha.(.lambda.¿1?)=2kj.alpha.(.lambda.¿2?)=1, .alpha.(.lambda.¿1?) et .alpha.(.lambda.¿2?) désignant les coefficients d'absorption pour le chromophore prédéterminé à chaque longueur d'ondes.
