In the process of U-ing and O-ing for the manufacture of large diameter pipe, it is proposed to either tack-weld or continuously weld the abutting edges of the O-ed pipe while it remains in the O-ing press, by using a source of laser power to project a beam of laser energy lengthwise down the center of the O-ed pipe, the beam being focused on the pipe seam at the 12 o'clock position by an optics carriage travelling lengthwise within the pipe on a cantilevered or end- supported boom. With the laser producing a continuous laser beam of constant energy, the carriage can move progressively from one end to the other of the pipe at a speed which allows a continuous weld to be created at the seam. Alternatively, the seam can be tack-welded but using the same apparatus, by moving the carriage in a fast-slow cycle, the slow portion allowing the focused laser energy to create a moving keyhole of molten metal at the seam, while the fast movement is rapid enough to minimize melting the metal at the seam. In another mode the source of laser energy can operate in a stop-start cycle, with the carriage either stopping or travelling at a low speed to allow the intermittent laser energy to form a spot or a short length of tack-weld at the seam.
